The challenge

Everything is changing but nothing has changed – a statement that Sport Waikato has clear evidence of when it comes to Sport. Satisfaction levels of sport participants in the Waikato region are low, and this is particularly true among youth (rangatahi 12-17 years). We know that:
  • Only 58% of Waikato youth are doing enough physical activity to positively impact their health
  • The percentage of Waikato youth engaged in sport has remained static since 2013
  • Between the ages of 14-17 years drop off from sport is significant and steep (57% of participants between 12-17 years of age drop out of sport and most never return).
  • Youth are disengaging from sport due to factors such as:
  • A lack of quality coaching
  • Being enabled to have FUN while participating
  • Having opportunities available to them that meet their needs
  • Youth tend to rate their satisfaction in sport far lower than the ranking most people give to their satisfaction with their banks!
Sport Waikato are committed to doing something about this problem and are seeking a capable Sport Development Manager who is up for the challenge of resolving it to guide a team of great people to lead change in youth sport for the region. Our goal: to have 75% of young people active (and enjoying themselves while doing it), by 2030!
The person
To achieve this goal and activate change for our region’s 37,000 young people, we need someone who:
  • Has demonstrable experience influencing decision-makers in sport (Chief Executives, Boards, Principals) – we’re talking influencing changes in competition structures, participation and development opportunities, and focuses on increasing quality coaching practices!
  • Has proven sport sector experience, including an understanding of the secondary school and RSO/club environment and/or an understanding of the philosophies of coaching
  • Has at least 5 years experience leading and managing teams
  • Can think strategically and connect the dots to make change happen in complex environments

2020 was a year of transformational change for Sport Waikato as they drive toward their Moving Waikato strategy, a strategy to grow participation in play, active recreation and sport in the Waikato region.
