The Financial Services Federation (“FSF”) is the industry body representing responsible and ethical finance and leasing providers in New Zealand. The FSF has more than sixty members and affiliates providing first-class financing, leasing, investment, banking and insurance products and services to over 1.5 million New Zealand consumers and businesses. The FSF’s affiliate members include internationally recognised legal and consulting partners.

The financial services sector is constantly evolving. Its importance to consumers and the economy generally means that it is highly regulated, and that regulation is also constantly evolving so the FSF has made an exciting decision to create a new position for a Legal and Policy Manager.

This is an exciting opportunity for a smart, enthusiastic and driven Law, Finance or Public Policy graduate who is seeking to develop and further their skills within in the financial services industry. You will be part of an amazing small and close-knit team that works collaboratively to provide quality submissions to Government and quality events and communications to its members.  

Reporting to the Executive Director, you will be responsible for providing analysis and legal advice and advocacy and will contribute to the development of public policy on issues affecting FSF members, which includes:
  • Supporting the Executive Director to prepare submissions on behalf of members to Parliamentary Select Committees and government agencies on proposed legislative change
  • Advocating on behalf of the FSF membership to drive strong relationships and understanding between FSF and its stakeholders
  • Advising the Executive Director and members on relevant industry law changes and issues on a proactive basis
  • Maintaining strong relationships with government, influencers and member representatives
  • Providing regular regulatory updates to members
  • Assisting the wider team with conferences and events management and the development of internal FSF policies and communication plans as required
To be considered for this role, you will have a broad understanding of the policy development and legislative process. You will be in your element working in a broad and varied position within a small team and will be happy to roll up your sleeves when it's "all hands to the pump".
Person Profile:
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in law, banking and finance and/or public policy
  • Experience in or an interest in the financial sector is desirable
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills
  • Effective relationship building capabilities, ability to relate to people at all levels
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • A high level of maturity with the ability to problem solve, use initiative and work autonomously
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Efficient, effective and highly organised
  • A good sense of humour and positive attitude
The initial term of the role will be a 12-month fixed term to enable assessment at the end of that period of the value the role has added to the FSF’s members.  There is scope for the role to be extended to a permanent position beyond that period if the role has demonstrably contributed to the achievement of the FSF’s strategic goals and objectives.
