Commercial Lawyer

Our client is a commercial legal and consulting firm with a focus on commercial law, governance and workplace issues, intellectual property and Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP).  Their work is exciting, innovative, satisfying and at the forefront of assisting the fast-growing Indigenous business sector working with clients in the private sector, NGO’s, government and Indigenous community organisations. 

They are looking for legal talent to join their team. A confident, positive and energetic person, who enjoys a challenge and wants to make a difference. 

The successful candidate will have:   
  • At least 5 years’ post-admission experience working in private practice
  • Unrestricted practising certificate, 
  • Experience in intellectual property and commercial law
  • Preferably some understanding of Indigenous Cultural & Intellectual Property (ICIP) an advantage
  • Must have experience mentoring and supervising junior legal staff
  • Self-motivated, problem solver and experience in managing own matters and clients
  • Experience with billable hours and billing budgets
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and team skills, good communicator, patient, positive, flexible in approach, good people skills
  • Excellent personal presentation
  • High level of integrity and confidentiality, with a can-do attitude
  • A strong commitment to a co-operative workplace and diversity
  • Able to draft reports and conduct consultations, including analysis and recommendations.
  • Strong legal writing and drafting experience (letters of advice, contracts, policies and protocols – without a template)
  • Excellent legal interpretation, critical analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Strong time management, planning and prioritisation capabilities
  • Familiar with working to inhouse systems and procedures
  • Proficient with touch typing, IT, software and cloud computing (we use LEAP Legal and MS Office software)
  • Experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
Key accountabilities:   
  • Undertake expert legal and consultancy work as required by Senior Leadership Team to a high standard of legal proficiency, with due care, understanding and skill, within budget and to deadlines
  • Build strong, respectful and long-lasting relationships with Clients
  • Manage multiple matters in a high pressured and unpredictable environment with a high degree of autonomy while also managing client expectations and deadlines
  • Welcome challenges and persist in working through novel and difficult issues
  • Be accountable for matters, accept criticism and review and respond in a thoughtful and considered way
  • Provide leadership, encouragement and guidance to junior lawyers
  • Collaborate with and sign off on work created by junior lawyers
  • Attend and contribute to organisation-related meetings, projects and activities, as required
  • Adhere to all legal obligations, responsibilities and legislative requirements
