The power systems group of this well-established consultancy has partnered with Phillip Riley exclusively to appoint a Principal Protection Engineer to their New Zealand business. Ideally, we are looking for someone keen to join in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch but for the right person, we could consider other locations.  
With a lengthy history operating across New Zealand and Australia on projects of significance, this is a chance to join this business as a trusted technical leader. You will be part of a wider group of circa 30 protection engineers and one of five here in New Zealand.
We are interested in Engineers that have expertise in the design and creation of protection schemes in transmission and /or generation. Having many years of experience maybe you are currently a Senior Engineer looking to step up into a Principal role, or should you already be at this level, maybe you want to work on more challenging projects.
With several recent wins across Australasia there is much for you to work on and be involved with, project values are in the hundreds of millions… I can divulge specifics if you contact me for a confidential discussion.
What we need from you;
As a Principal Engineer and technical leader, you will lead, review, coach and develop others in the protection team. There are opportunities to interface with other peers internationally, keeping your professional and technical development moving in a forward’s direction.
In regard to design, you should be capable of undertaking substation protection and control design and parameterization as well as supporting the customer with technical presentations and training deliveries. You will need to assist the project team and the customer in the development of the design plans, specifications and philosophy documents to meet customer requirements, perform testing and commissioning as required.
To be considered for this opportunity you will need the following:
  • Electronic Engineering qualification with specialisation in electrical power systems (generation, distribution, transmission grids)
  • In-depth experience in Electrical Protection Systems (Relays, protection settings and tests), Control Systems (RTUs, SCADAs) and Communication Systems and Protocols (Ethernet, SDH, IEC 61850, DNP 3, Modbus, IEC104)
  • In-depth experience in protection system design and commissioning for electrical substations
  • Good knowledge of programming languages (C, Visual Basic, STL, SCL, CFC)
