About the Role
We currently have an opportunity for a research assistant or field hand to join our team in Mackay. This is the perfect step for an enthusiastic person who enjoys working in outdoor environments on an important agronomy project. Alternatively, a newly qualified science graduate could gain experience and get their foot in the door to a rewarding career. You will work as part of the team who are responsible for assessing enhanced efficiency fertilisers in order to improve nitrogen use efficiency and sustainability for the Australian sugarcane industry.  The role includes:
  
  • Conducting soil and plant sampling in accordance with trial protocols
  • Collection of water samples and maintenance of sampling equipment
  • Applying fertiliser treatments to demonstration strip trials at establishment
  • Assisting with harvesting of demonstration strip trials
  • Organise and format trial data in a clear and accurate manner
  • Maintain accurate records of all trial activities
  • Process samples for chemical analysis
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of project intellectual property and all commercially sensitive information (essential)
  • Ensure that milestones, work objectives and deadlines applicable to various  project activities are met, and the project is progressing as planned
  • Supervision of casual staff if needed
  • Any additional duties as required.
About You
You will be very happy to ‘get your hands dirty’ in hot and physical conditions in the field and yet have the ability to assist in managing data. It is essential that you have:
  • Experience and capability to work outdoors in challenging conditions;
  • Willingness to work outside normal operating hours
  • Experience in agriculture or science is desirable however all applicants will be considered;
  • Computer skills and high attention to detail required for data entry and recording;
  • Ability to travel regularly to other SRA locations;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with sugarcane growers and researchers;
  • Candidates with experience in operating agricultural machinery will be highly regarded;
  • Manual drivers licence is essential.
Please note this is a twelve month contract with the possibility of extension. Applicants must have the right to work in Australia in order to apply.  A working-holiday visa is not suitable due to the restriction of no more than 6 months’ work with any one employer.
