We are seeking a regionally based, outstanding corporate communications expert to help us meet the needs of our diverse stakeholders.

Southern Ports is the custodian of three ‘gateways’ that connect Western Australia to the world and encompass the ports of Albany, Bunbury and Esperance. Our regional ports support the efficient, cost effective, and safe movement of trade for the mining, forestry, agriculture and tourism industries.
Since forming in 2014, Southern Ports has brought together the skills and talents of more than 170 women and men in a wide range of trades and corporate roles across four sites.
As a Government Trading Enterprise, Southern Ports exists to create sustained value for the communities we serve, the State of WA and to deliver a dividend to Government who is our major shareholder.
We are seeking a regionally based, outstanding corporate communications expert to help us meet the needs of our diverse stakeholders including customers, port users and local communities. The successful applicant will have extensive experience across all aspects of the marketing and communications mix including internal and external communications, media relations, brand and reputation management, stakeholder relations, advertising, and the management of digital channels and publications.
The Role
Key responsibilities include:
  • Development, implementation and evaluation of an integrated stakeholder engagement strategy targeting Government, port users, customers, the local community and internal audiences. This will include the commissioning of research, provision of advice and tactical communication initiatives and ongoing evaluation, in order to drive continuous improvement of Southern Ports’ corporate reputation.
  • Driving the proactive and reactive media relations and engagement strategy, acting as first point of contact for all media enquiries on behalf of the organisation.
  • Working closely with the CEO and members of the executive to provide timely, specialist and strategic advice and coaching on communications matters relating to media engagement, reputation, and issues management, advocacy and stakeholder relationships.
  • Acting as custodian of the Southern Ports brand and visual identity ensuring adherence to the corporate style guide across all communications and media.
  • Development and execution of the inaugural Southern Ports’ social media policy, presence and content calendar.
  • Driving process improvement in the community sponsorship program including a comprehensive review of the existing program and development of a community investment framework to support the objectives of Southern Ports’ strategic plan.
The Expertise
The successful candidate will have:
  • A proven track record of successfully managing the corporate affairs function of an organisation including effective stakeholder engagement, media and government relations, building corporate reputation through research, analysis, planning and review of initiatives across key stakeholder groups including community and customers.
  • Experience in effectively driving a proactive and reactive media relations strategy including media monitoring and maintaining awareness of emerging issues relevant to the organisation.
  • Demonstrated experience in partnering with executives and managers to seamlessly and proactively support an organisation in achieving its external and internal communication objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication with a track record of success in building effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing content and producing communications for diverse media, including intranet, social media, and print.
  • High level analytical and problem solving skills to effectively deal with complexity and ambiguity.
  • Sound project management skills to plan, schedule, monitor and review progress over time.


Southern Ports first preference is to appoint the Corporate Affairs Advisor to one of our regional centres of Albany, Bunbury or Esperance. Applicants residing outside of these centres may also be considered, with the understanding that regular and extensive travel is an inherent requirement of the role.
