Full Job Description:

Minjar Gold is an Australian gold explorer, developer and producer. Since 2009, Minjar Gold has developed and operated assets spread throughout Western Australia and Queensland. Located south-west of Townsville, the Pajingo mine is around 50km from Charters Towers and currently employs around 200 people to run the underground mining, open cut and ore processing operations. Charters Towers is close to Townsville and the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef. It also offers excellent schooling opportunities and has all of the facilities that you would expect in a large regional town.

Minjar Gold is experiencing a period of exciting growth at our Pajingo gold operation including the development of a new boxcut and portal. We currently have a vacancy for a permanent full-time Senior Geotechnical Engineer to be based in Charters Towers on a 5/2/4/3 roster, or FIFO on an 8/6 roster out of Queensland.

About the role:

Reporting to the Mine Manager, this role’s primary purpose is to provide sound Geotechnical advice and planning input to the Pajingo mining operations while managing risks associated with geotechnical hazards within the bounds of the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and Regulation 2001 in order to maintain and improve mine safety.

Duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Ensure that Pajingo Mine complies with the relevant Mining Act and Regulations with respect to managing geotechnical risk
  • Manage and review the Ground Control Management Plans for both open cut and UG
  • Assess and facilitate the assessment of new open pit and underground mines
  • Facilitate all internal and external geotechnical audits and inspections & develop and maintain internal auditing tools as required including appropriate QA/QC
  • Perform stability analysis of slopes in Open Pits and UG excavations using accepted industry practices
  • Review geotechnical core logging for vertical opening and stoping areas to ensure that structures are taken into account for UG stoping
  • Work with Mine Planners to optimise stope and bench sequencing to promote good mining practice and predictable results
  • Review/refine and optimise the ground support policies for UG development to manage the ground conditions in a cost efficient and practical manner
  • Improve selective mining processes via reduction in stope over break and dilution
  • Facilitate all geotechnical data acquisition and analysis conducted by third party consultants as required
  • Prepare appropriate capital and operating budgets and justifications relating to geotechnical expenditure
  • Maintain a positive attitude towards safety in the workplace and increase safety awareness, implement safety training and promotions and set an example for others. 


About you:

To be successful in this role you will ideally possess;

  • A relevant Engineering or Rock Mechanic Engineering qualification
  • At least 5 years of mining industry experience in a geotechnical capacity with proven knowledge in both Open Cut and Underground mining methods
  • Experience with geotechnical investigations, interpretation and reporting as well as the development of models (both underground and open cut)
  • Technical Skills in specialised Geotechnical, Mining Software and Mine Planning Systems - namely Deswik, Rocscience suite and Map3D
  • Extensive experience in mine operations with the ability to prioritise and schedule work while working safely at all times
  • Familiarity with new technology developments and instrumentation
  • Strong analytical skills coupled with a solid understanding of statutory requirements
  • Excellent communicator with strong stakeholder relationship and engagement skills
