We are seeking an experienced lawyer (4-5 pqe) to take a position within our legal team on a 6 month fixed term basis, report to the Head of Legal within the operations team. This role is integral to meeting Hireup’s continued growth and success.  The role will suit a motivated and hands-on commercial lawyer who thrives in fast-paced and dynamic environments and is able to autonomously influence senior stakeholders in the business. The person is able to clearly communicate a business-appropriate, commercial, strategic approach to the legal and risk advice provided in respect to all aspects of the business.

Priorities - the work
  • Be a trusted advisor for the business by providing timely, strategic and commercial legal advice in a manner that influences decision-making within the business. 
  • Autonomously drive and be the ‘point person’ from a legal perspective for the business on strategic commercial projects, particularly in the area of privacy and data management.
  • Provide practical and strategic legal advice to the business, including resolving significant and complex legal issues relating to privacy, commercial risk, commercial contracting, data management issues, incident and disputes management and compliance matters.
  • Manage the provision of information and training to the business on relevant or emerging legal issues.
  • Work collaboratively and hand-in-hand as a valued partner to each team within the Hireup business in respect to various day-to-day legal issues faced by the business including:
    • Developing Hireup’s approach to privacy and data management;
    • Drafting and managing commercial contracts for the business;
    • Supporting the Community Team (as required) in relation to critical incidents and responding to requests for information;
  • Actively contribute to the legal team in relation to excelling in the provision of the legal function, simplifying processes and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement where applicable.
  • Actively monitoring and advising the business about new or changing legislation and regulation and emerging risks.
Skills - the person
  • Bachelor of Laws with an excellent academic record
  • 4-5 years of post-admission experience, preferably including in-house experience in the areas of privacy and commercial law
  • Strong connection to, or interest in building an understanding of the Australian disability sector and community
  • Maturity, operational and strong commercial judgement, and proven experience building positive working relationships with senior leaders, executives and business teams
  • An ability to operate independently and to apply judgement and knowledge to various situations, including risk identification and management, regulation evaluation and change implementation
  • A thorough understanding of the commercial and regulatory environment affecting the disability sector
  • Demonstrated judgment in identifying and managing emerging legal issues
  • A customer-centred focus with a desire to deliver a strong level of service
  • Enthusiasm, initiative and the willingness to manage a complex and diverse workload and the ability to balance and prioritise work and manage expectations of multiple stakeholders
  • Strong general commercial aptitude and technical legal skills and attention to detail
  • Approach work with high-energy, drive and internal motivation
  • Exhibit adaptability, resilience, transparency, trustworthiness, passion and innate curiosity
