Founded in early 2015 and based in Sydney, Hireup is a trusted online platform and community for people with disability and their families to find, hire and manage support workers that fit their needs and share their interests. Whether it’s support with getting to work, catching a local footy game or taking the scenic route, Hireup gives people with disability the tools to live the most flexible, seamless and supported life possible. With over 80,000 registered users and support workers in communities all across Australia, Hireup is a national network of local supports. As an Engineering Manager, your primary focus will be supporting and developing a rapidly expanding team of diverse engineers to help them be highly effective contributors and collaborators. This is a people focused role requiring a passion for helping people grow, allowing you to share your technical expertise and love of the engineering craft with a team of people eager to learn.

Priorities - the work
  • Work closely with the CTO, Agile Team Coach and Product Managers to help teams achieve high performance through supporting, coaching and mentoring of individual engineers to help unlock their potential
  • Work with the architects to define an appropriate development philosophy and hold teams accountable to agreed-upon standards while providing technical mentoring to increase engineering discipline, for example, upskilling engineers in TDD, agile ways of working, effective code reviews, design & architecture, continuous delivery
  • Foster a culture of innovation, technical excellence and knowledge sharing
  • Provide line management to engineers across multiple agile teams to facilitate and guide professional development and oversee and support individual performance
  • Assess and monitor team dynamics and skills blend to identify opportunities for up-skilling and hiring requirements to fill gaps
  • Maintain a good understanding of the technology and tooling the team is using and make recommendations where appropriate
  • Assist with planning and executing on team scaling and recruitment
  • Help build and deliver an engaging and impactful onboarding experience for new team members to ensure consistency in understanding of our ways of working and adherence to our development philosophy 
  • Help grow our team of junior engineers into highly capable engineers and continue to invest in finding and growing future talent through options such as a grad program, internships or partnering with coding bootcamp institutions
  • Work closely with our Talent Acquisition team to build our brand as a leading employer of technical talent and a great place to work
  • Represent Hireup at industry events such as conferences and meet-ups and encourage and mentor others in the team to participate and present
Skills - the person
  • Software engineering background, ideally with experience working in an online product company
  • Development experience with JavaScript, Node, modern front-end frameworks/libraries, Elixir, functional programming, event-driven/sourced architectures, varied database paradigms such as relational, document, graph, etc. or AWS highly regarded
  • Proven experience managing and leading a team of engineers
  • Experience hiring and assessing the capability of engineers of varying skill levels and areas of technical expertise
  • Experience working in an agile environment, ideally multi-team
  • Passion for technology, software development and growing people
  • Strong communication and presentation skills - experience presenting at industry events highly regarded
  • Strong connection to, or interest in building an understanding of the Australian disability sector and community
  • Approach work with high-energy, drive and internal motivation
  • Exhibit adaptability, resilience, transparency, trustworthiness, passion and innate curiosity
  • Well connected in the local tech scene a bonus
