A unique and exciting opportunity has arisen for an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person, to lead an established multidisciplinary team of dynamic researchers to work on the NDRI Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Program and further enhance NDRI as a centre of best practice in conducting community driven research. The successful applicant will be offered either an academic or professional role, depending on their qualifications and experience.

About the National Drug Research Institute (NDRI)
 
The NDRI mission is to conduct and disseminate high quality research that supports evidence informed policy, strategies and practice to prevent and minimise alcohol and other drug-related health, social and economic harms among individuals, families and communities in Australia. It is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Alcohol and Drug Abuse. NDRI research has informed and contributed significantly to policy and evidence-based practice in Australia and internationally.
 
Research from the NDRI Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Research Program contributes to the prevention and reduction of the burden of harm caused by alcohol and other drugs (AOD) amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.  

The Research:
  • Focuses on the inter-related topics of changing patterns of AOD use, factors related to, and the impact of, harmful use on individuals, families and communities, efficient and effective provision of services, and improved policy responses.
  • Is based on well-established partnerships with Aboriginal community controlled health organisations, with Aboriginal community stakeholders and organisations actively involved in all aspects of research from planning through to translation into policy and strategies.
Your new role
 
Your duties will vary slightly depending on your previous academic/professional experience, but will involve:
  • Developing relationships and participating as a representative or member of national peak and other bodies in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, promoting alcohol and other drug and related issues.
  • Refining and further developing systems to ensure research with Aboriginal communities has appropriate relevance and accountability in how it is conducted in partnership with Aboriginal community stakeholders.
  • Undertaking your own program of research (research applicants only), and being a chief investigator/contributing to applications for nationally competitive research grants and/or fellowships.
  • Contributing to/producing significant research outputs and participating in the presentation of research findings to seminars, workshops and conferences.
  • Manage staff and/or co-supervise honours, masters and doctoral students.
You will bring to the role:
  • High levels of performance and leadership in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, community service delivery, drug and alcohol service provision and/or social research.
  • A strong track record of community involvement and engagement with the ability to develop and maintain relationships with key Aboriginal organisations and other stakeholders at a local, state and national level.
  • High level oral and written communication skills with the ability to structure, engage and present information to a variety of audiences.
  • Highly developed organisational skills.
  • The ability to work collaboratively within a large multi-project team.
