Who you will be working for

What your role will be
Performing actuarial or pricing calculations to assist the relevant business units in obtaining and managing a profitable business by supporting the work of more experienced actuaries/pricing specialists, starting to demonstrate reasonable levels of autonomy in known tasks

What you will be doing

Primary responsibilities

Policy, Process and Procedures

  • Apply relevant technical proficiency and knowledge acquired through assigned work and self study
  • Develops new monitoring, analysis, reports under direction
  • Develops broader and/or in-depth knowledge and experience in relevant software packages
  • Thoroughly checks all analysis performed, displaying good judgement and suggesting improvements to processes
  • Knows and applies all relevant actuarial standard
Environmental Awareness/Customer Focus
  • Developing relationships with internal stakeholders
  • Demonstrating general understanding of business unit and support functions
  • Develops broader awareness of industry issues
  • Business business writing skills and oral communication skills expanding to more complex issues, clearly setting out results
Technical Performance
  • Conduct actuarial or pricing research as required, including filtering and interpreting data, under the direction of a Senior Analyst or Manager
  • Responsible for carrying out assignments or projects, performing actuarial analyses, investigations, modelling under supervision
  • Identify and articulate technical issues, showing awareness of the implications
  • Builds and checks good code base for data preparation in a repeatable and sustainable manner
  • Experienced use of in-house systems (in relevant area e.g. reserving, budgeting, pricing, capital modelling) to complete actuarial research and analysis and provide performance related statistics and advice (under supervision)
People management
  • Providing technical advice and guidance to less experienced actuarial staff (e.g. as buddy)

Who you are

Essential Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Experience: 2 years relevant experience
Desirable Competencies / Skills
  • Degree in actuarial or mathematically focused area. Note, pricing specialists may have a wider range of degrees focused on data science, modelling, statistics
  • Typically passed part 1 or is finishing part 2 exams, may be pursuing part 3 exams
  • 2 to 3 years’ experience in general insurance industry
  • One or more years’ experience in the specialised product area and or specialised task area (e.g. pricing, valuation)
  • Ability to analyse, interpret, extrapolate and extract data from a number of sources
  • Ability to communicate actuarial concepts both verbally and in writing
  • Good programming skills in software commonly used in actuarial and pricing
What have you done
In an ideal world you will have spent approximately 2 years in an Insurance company responsible for Actuarial Analytics. However, and recognizing we do not live in an ideal world, I encourage all Actuarial Analysts within the Insurance industry to apply – should you be interested!
