Waikanae kindergarten serves a diverse community which covers a wide geographical area.  It is situated in a native reserve and is 10 minutes walk from the railway station and local shops.  The kindergarten feeds into 2 local schools and has children attending both kindergarten and local child care centres.

A broad variety of family groupings are represented: single parents, co-parent, nuclear and extended family. We have a multicultural community and encourage families to be involved with their child’s daily life at kindergarten.

The kindergarten is well resourced, having spacious grounds which enhance our environmental studies. Our philosophy has a strong emphasis on respectful and responsive relationships with children, parents/whānau and team members. 

The team’s strong interest in the environment and working in the wider community guide practices as the team strengthen embedding deeper bicultural practices, and socio-cultural competencies throughout the programme. The team also values music and storytelling to support childrens  learning.

We are looking for an experienced ECE teacher who:
  • will implement Te Ao Māori; within a Whānau Based Approach (Ako, Hāpori, Whānau and Tuakana/Teina) as well as Te Reo and Tikanga Māori into the programme
  • is a self-motivated person who values intentional teaching and demonstrates a high level of professionalism, energy and desire to do the best by all children and their families, through a partnership approach
  • demonstrates a commitment to environmental studies and the well-being of animals within a range of environments
  • is familiar with a shared/distributed leadership model and engages in implementing this model by showing initiative and flexibility
  • demonstrates an enjoyment and commitment to toddlers and young children’s learning capabilities fostering and encouraging tuakana/teina relationships
