Chief Technology Officer

Reports to: CEO & Founder, Hub Australia

Start date: 5 July 2021 (or before by mutual agreement)

Location: Melbourne or Sydney

Employment Type: Permanent, Full-time

Ordinary hours of work:
You are required to work 38 hours per week, plus all such reasonable additional hours as may be required to properly perform your duties in accordance with this agreement or as directed by the board.

Your Role:

The CTO is responsible for providing the strategic and operational leadership for Information Technology (IT) including applications, enabling infrastructure, data, digital functions, and UX for staff and customers.

The position reports directly to the CEO. We envisage that when the role commences there will be one direct report from the leadership team, the National Technology Infrastructure Manager, who in turn has a team of 2 people reporting to them. We expect that you will immediately add a second direct report to the Leadership Team that will focus on applications and data. We anticipate the Technology Team growing to 6 to 8 persons over the next 3 years. 

The CTO exists to enable the achievement of business objectives through technology and does this via:
  • A constant focus on the needs of customers and staff to create a digital experience they love.
  • Collaborating with the business and technology to create and oversee the delivery of the Technology strategy, aligning it to the business’ strategic plans, in order to maximize the value of technology investments
  • Working closely with other C-level executives and the Leadership Team to create plans for, and be the catalyst of, the business’ future growth, by delivering innovation and improved organisational efficiency
  • Leadership and management of the technology team and any suppliers or partners that provide elements of our technology stack.
  • Embedding and evolving the technology vision, accelerating ways of working, and amplifying the capability of the technology function
  • Fostering an agile working environment and accelerating ways of working
  • Providing the oversight to ensure technology governance, infrastructure, operations and partnerships are appropriate.
  • Leadership of the Technology team in line with our values, mission and impact
  • Strategy: Lead collaboration with the business to facilitate the identification, development, acceptance and execution of the technology strategy to enable achievement of clear business objectives in both our digital and physical spaces
  • People Leadership: Role model the expected standard of behaviors in line with the organisational values and demonstrates authentic, empathetic, clear and enthusiastic leadership whilst mentoring and developing IT staff
  • Managing a team of external developers and software application vendors/providers; ensuring planned system upgrades and development are on track and to the user experience we expect
  • User experience for customers and staff: Continuous improvement and focus on optimising the user experience of our digital platforms for both our customers and staff. You will be part of a broader Customer Experience team and will partner with other departments to select and implement suitable technology that best meets the needs of our customers.
  • Innovation: Drive the identification and adoption of innovative and, where relevant, disruptive, technologies and leading practices to improve the organisation.
  • Project Leadership: Lead collaboration with the business to ensure inception, suitable approach, management and delivery / rollout of the portfolio of technology projects and initiatives. This includes, where relevant, proof of concept, pilot / trial and incubation. 
  • Transformation. Lead the adoption of approved technologies and arrangements that improve the business whilst mitigating risk of operational disruption.
  • Environment: Accountability for responsive, effective, reliable, robust, scalable, secure, disaster tolerant enabling IT infrastructure and related services to end users and customers. This includes responsibility for delivering the internet, phones, printers, AV, security infrastructure, and support essential to our members’ workplace experience.
  • Vendors and Partners: Manage the value, relationship, quality and timeliness of service provided by third parties. Where required, lead the evaluation, selection and negotiation of technology suppliers and providers. Provide support to ensure the evaluation of applications when led by the business consider technology elements appropriately.
  • Financial Management: Responsible for creation & management of technology operational and capital expenditure in line with the organisation approach to financial management and delegation of authority.

To succeed in the role you must have:
  • Played a senior technology role in complex environments
  • Proven success in understanding the business strategy and then coming up with the right technology solution to enable it.
  • The ability to understand what technologies are required to respond to requests by customers and staff
  • Inspired ambitious and high performing teams to continuously learn and grow
  • Lead a diverse team of professionals to create systems and processes that make optimum use of current technologies to meet business needs
  • Strong knowledge of industry best practices in architecture, particularly secure wifi networks, and software development
  • Ability to balance strategic and operational perspectives
  • Critical stakeholder engagement and management experience
  • Knowledge of, and experience in implementing and maintaining, widely available enterprise systems such as ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), CRM (Customer/Contact Relationship Management), HCM (Human Capital Management) and WFM (Workforce Management).
