A Technical Engineering Manager is required by a leading boat builder in Cape Town, South Africa.

Our client is a leading and respected player in vessel construction and are looking to hire a Technical Engineering Manager.

The Technical Engineering Manager will plan and manage all engineering functions and deliverables related to new projects, engineering changes and stakeholder support (Manufacturing, Warranty, Quality etc). Ensuring that best practices are followed and that the department functions efficiently and effectively. Overall responsibility is assumed for the management of all other day-to-day design and technical engineering requirements

In order to be shortlisted for this vacancy, the successful candidate will require the following skills and competencies, but not limited to:-
  • Minimum Qualification: B.Tech/Degree in Engineering or a related field
  • Ideal Qualification: Honours degree in Engineering or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years related Engineering experience coupled with at least 2 years related managerial exposure
  • Strategic thinking capabilities.
  • Technical capacity / capability.
  • Engineering management experience essential.
  • Ability to plan and organise self and teams in order to achieve deliverables.
  • Must have the ability to lead and motivate teams.
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office programs and in particular MS Projects.
  • Have sound knowledge of Environmental Health and Safety Legislation.
  • Leadership skills; to create a high-performance culture and motivate subordinates.
  • Must be a systematic person with strong analytical abilities.
  • Must be a highly goal orientated and conscientious individual.
  • Excellent communications skills.
  • Critical thinking and effective problem-solving skills.
  • Effective decision making.
  • Knowledge of boat building techniques and processes would be advantageous.

Reporting to the Tooling Manager, the responsibilities of the role include, but not limited to: -
  • Operational Excellence:
  • Manage all design, technical engineering and supporting resources.
  • Manage the Engineering Change Request (ECR) process.
  • Vault administration.
  • PDM workflow management.
  • Set design and engineering targets in line with the company’s strategy and targets.
  • Measure engineering department outputs relative to targets.
  • Create processes and standards to improve technical engineering functions.
  • Planning and allocating tasks to ensure that project deliverables are met in accordance with the various project schedules.
  • Ensure that designs are within planned parameters with regards to cost, weight and assembly hours required.
  • Create and implement new ways of tracking progress and reporting on all projects and ECR’s as needed.
  • Manage all Solidworks and PDM software licenses.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating boat option lists.
  • Ensure that Design for Manufacture (DFM) principles are incorporated in new product design.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of model bill of materials (BOM's).
  • Ensure that all standard operating procedures and design processes are followed within the department.
  • Create and implement new standard operating procedures and design processes as needed.
  • Ensure best operating practices are implemented and that continuous improvement is embedded within the department.
  • Ensure that design and technical engineering progress reports (Milestone Trackers) are prepared and maintained on an ongoing basis.
  • Provide technical support to warranty and quality related queries.
  • Reduce waste and warranty claims through product design improvements.
  • Report on departmental activities on a regular basis to the Director, Execs and customer ensuring accurate and timely reporting of relevant KPA’s.
  • Environmental, Health and Safety:
  • Ensure that the function operates in accordance with any health, safety and environmental Legislation, policies and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors.
  • People Management:
  • Build and maintain an effective team o Ensuring that the operating objectives and standards of performance are not only understood but owned by the team members.
  • Monitoring the actions and performance of all team members.
  • Continuous guidance and mentoring activities to the team members.
  • Monitor and review the performance of department members and arrange applicable training and development to ensure improvement.
  • Ensure a disciplined workforce is maintained / resolving disciplinary issues according to the Company Policies.
  • Ensure a highly skilled and motivated workforce is maintained.
  • Implement Succession planning in reporting departments.
  • Implement Employment Equity as per the Employment Equity Plan.
  • Create and maintain KPI/KPA’s for staff as required
  • Financial Management:
  • Developing the annual Design and Technical Engineering budgets and forecasts and all capital expenditure proposals.
  • Implementing and being accountable for the Design and Technical Engineering departmental annual budgets.
  • Manage and control spending on departmental budget.
  • Implement applicable cost control programs and measures.
  • Ad hoc:
  • Perform ad hoc tasks as and when required
