Steelwork Design Manager (Scotland)

Bila Group is engaged by an industry leading innovator when it comes to the design, manufacture, and erection of primary/structural and secondary/architectural steelwork.  The client has built a reputation synonymous with excellence in the field of constructional steelwork.  With ambitious plans for further growth and under the direction of an entrepreneurial leadership team, the business has made the decision to bolster its front-end support with the appointment of an industry experienced steelwork business development leader who will play a key role in converting opportunities to provide a service whilst also developing and building on existing and new client relationships. This is an exciting opportunity for a heavily experienced steelwork professional to play a pivotal role in taking this World class Engineering business into its next phase of growth.  The business development manager will be hugely accomplished when it comes to building a pipeline of opportunities to provide a service and will also have vast experience in marketing/positioning the business as a leader in the sectors being targeted namely, rail, primary & architectural structural steel, marine, offshore, transmission towers and renewable sectors.
Scope of Role
The Design Manager is a direct report to the MD and a member of the management team. The primary function of the role is to provide design and detailing services aligned to the company’s strategy while maximising profitability and minimising risk. The design services group maintains its own P&L and the manager will be responsible for the financial performance of the group. The manager will also support the MD and wider management team in defining and delivering the business strategy in terms of markets, solutions and operational capabilities.
1 Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participate in tender and contractual reviews where appropriate to advise on technical risk and effective solutions.
  • Acts as technical authority on all design engineering related decisions ensuring appropriate standards and best practices are adhered to optimise designs for cost, quality and function.
  • Ensures quality of design and detailing deliverables are acceptable and fit for purpose via internal operations or external client review. Solicits and acts upon feedback from Operations on drawing quality and design for manufacturing issues.
  • Drives design and drawing office best practice via standards and procedures. Ensures design automation tools are optimised and maintained. Champions principles of design re-use for reduced cycle time and ensures quality and efficiency are continuously improved.
  • Owns and continuously improves the design and detailing processes.
  • Ensures appropriate capacity and capability of the design and detailing team to deliver high quality designs in a timely manner and responsible for managing all HR aspects of the team including personal development plans, hiring, performance management and rewards and recognition.
  • Manages the design program workload, creates plans in line with customer requirements and assigns resources to deliver the plan.
  • Ensures requirements are clarified and any exceptions are recorded and agreed.
  • Manages the client interface for timely and effective communication for exceptions, clarifications and approvals
  • Manages scope and ensures any design change requests are subject to variation order impacting price and/or delivery
  • Collaborates with the Finance Manager and Operations Manager to maintain the project portfolio in terms of cost and schedule performance and reports via the weekly program review meeting.
  • Participates in the monthly sales strategy meeting to agree key account development requirements and opportunities to improve sales opportunity conversion for design services.
  • Develops and implements business plans to expand company market share in design and geotechnical services.
  • Participates in the monthly management reviews and presents design group performance and direction. Maintains and reports financial performance of the design group P&L.

  2 Areas of Expertise, Skills and Qualifications
  • Good level of structural and civil engineering knowledge. C.Eng/MIStructE
  • Knowledge of current British and European design standards
  • Experience of operating in a ISO9001 quality management system
  • Steel and aluminium structure design in e.g. substations, power transmission, communication towers, rail gantries, access platforms, steel frame construction.
  • Ground works and geotechnical awareness.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft packages and ERP systems (StruMIS) as well as design automation tools (Tekla)
  • Strong commercial acumen, financial, contracting and project management essentials
  • Excellent negotiation skills.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an engineering leader to join a business who is heavily investing in growth.  This is a leadership role which will take accountability for all design and detailing on projects valued between £10k to £5Mn.  With the ability to have strategic input in terms of company direction, this role requires a commercially minded engineer who can influence growth through engineering excellence.
