We are actively seeking a commodity purchaser for a building materials client located in Western North Carolina.

About the Position:  The successful candidate with make commodity purchases for 4 to 6 company locations throughout NC and SC. The Commodity Purchaser will need to have and maintain a knowledge of lumber (grades, uses and mill qualities) also will have extensive knowledge of plywood (grades, thicknesses, uses and suppliers service). The successful candidate will have to be very familiar with each of the location markets. In addition, the Commodity Purchaser will establish and maintain all system and selling prices on various levels. The Commodity Purchaser will report to the location managers in each region. It is highly suggested that the applicant live in the Forest City NC area and be a part of the community and culture.
Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Purchase commodity materials (lumber, plywood, millwork and moldings etc.) for up to six (6) company locations
  • Negotiate pricing, contract purchasing, quality of materials and logistics with vendors/partners
  • Establish and maintain all system selling prices on various levels (retail, contractor, remodelers etc.)
  • Maintain GPM's for separate locations and their markets working with each of the location managers
  • Be aware of what the market will bear (shopping the competition) item by item category by category – Know Your Market and Products
  • Maintain proper inventory levels (item history and immediate demand)
  • Monitor and maintain inventory turns
  • Maintain communication with all location managers and outside sale reps for their needs and changes in the selling markets
  • Negotiate and manage rebates, discounts, special buys and co-op's
  • Handle any issues between customers and vendors
  • Obtain and manage logistics from vendors
  • Maintain proper quality of materials from vendors
  • Control quality and handling practices of our employees
  • Oversee cycle counts and adjustments
  • Oversee primary location end of year inventory
General Requirements:  
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and detailed
  • Must be a team player
  • Must be able to read personalities and adapt (customer, vendors and employees)
  • Must conduct business with the highest of integrity and morals
  • Must be able to work with location managers and outside sales rep's
  • Bachelor’s Degree is preferred and/or deep industry experience
  • Thorough knowledge of lumber, plywood, engineered wood, millwork and moldings
  • 2 to 3 years working in a purchasing/procurement role in the building materials industry working with vendors
  • 5 to 8 years’ experience in the building materials industry is preferred
